The Un/Learning Collective

The Un/Learning Collective, an instagram blog, aims to create a safe space on the internet facilitate conversations that many South Asians do not get to have growing up. They want to help unlearn the bigotry we have inherited from the generations that came before us by deconstructing our biases and honouring our experiences as a community, through an intersectional lens.

I worked with their team to design a logo and create several illustrated social media posts on topics ranging from queerness to casteism, colourism, and generational trauma.

Present-Day Caste Discrimination in India Infographic

My intention was to showcase the ignorance that tends to go hand-in-hand with caste privilege in India; upper-caste and upper-class individuals choose not to acknowledge the caste discrimination that exists right in front of their eyes. Here, an "uncle" is reading the newspaper, turning a blind eye to the grave truths about casteism. All images feature hand-drawn illustration and text created in Procreate.

Colourism Infographic

South Asian countries have a long-standing preoccupation with skin tone, which is one of the several lingering effects of colonialism. The first slide in the carousel post features a tube of a cream called Brown and Beautiful, a play on the infamous Fair & Lovely, an Indian fairness cream. All images feature hand-drawn illustration and text created in Procreate.

Bollywood x Pride Series

We commemorated Pride Month in 2020 by reimagining iconic Bollywood films in an alternate universe – one where popular media isn't inundated with heteronormative narratives. I made these illustrations in Procreate with heavy inspiration from the original movie posters, changing them so that they featured queer relationships.

The Caste System Illustration

This graphic was part of a post on the Origins of the Caste System, from our series on social stratification in India.
